The critically acclaimed Iranian animation Juliet and the King, written and directed by Ashkan Rahgozar, has won Best Animation at the New York International Art Film Festival (NYIAFF) 2025.
According IBland’s news, This is the film’s second international award, following its recognition at the Palm Springs International Animation Festival in the United States. Juliet and the King made its debut at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada earlier this year, receiving praise for its unique artistic vision and historical reinterpretation.
A Fantastical Retelling of Persian History
Produced by Hoorakhsh Studios, the feature-length Iranian animation explores a poetic, fantasy-infused narrative inspired by the complex relationship between Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, a 19th-century Persian monarch, and Julie, a fictional French stage actress. The film reimagines history through a visually rich and emotionally layered animated experience.
A Rising Force in Global Independent Animation
Organized by the New York Art Film Magazine, the NYIAFF is dedicated to supporting independent and artistic films from around the world. Now in its third edition, the festival evaluates works across genres including fiction, documentary, experimental, and animation, with a focus on creativity, human rights, and environmental themes.
The 2025 NYIAFF closing ceremony will take place on November 23 at Producers Club Theatre and other major art venues across New York City.
With this latest award, Juliet and the King cements its place as a standout example of Iranian animation making waves on the international festival circuit.
