AmirReza Mafi, director of the Soureh Animation Center, says Iran is one of the few countries in the world capable of producing cinematic animation independently, without relying on international resources. He called this a national achievement comparable to the work of global giants like Disney.

According to Ibland’s news, Mafi made the remarks during the 37th International Festival of Children and Youth Films in Isfahan, highlighting the importance of this annual event as a constant reminder of Iranian cinema’s responsibility toward younger generations.

According to Mafi, Iranian animation has matured significantly in recent years. Yet, financial resources and professional infrastructure remain the two biggest challenges holding the industry back. He emphasized the need for sustainable investment and fully equipped animation studios capable of handling end-to-end production processes independently.

Iranian Animation Is Rising; But Needs Support

Mafi stressed that Iranian animation artists have the same capabilities as international professionals; and in some cases, even outperform them. However, due to the economic disparity between the Iranian rial and foreign currencies, many skilled talents are drawn to international projects, weakening Iran’s internal human capital.

Despite these limitations, Mafi said, the Soureh Animation Center continues to prioritize content tailored to children and teens. He highlighted that many of their works are festival-ready and designed to reflect Iranian cultural narratives.

He described the current screening of the animated film Yooz in Iranian cinemas as part of this larger vision and expressed hope that young audiences will connect with and enjoy it.

Mafi added, Iranian animation is on a forward-moving path. With consistent support and stronger infrastructure, he believes the country can build a sustainable animation industry that competes globally while staying rooted in its national identity.
